Understanding the types of sedation used in dentistry can help alleviate anxiety and promote a more comfortable experience. At Boca Dental Studio, Dr. Luke Aiura and Dr. Robert Villa are committed to patient comfort and safety, providing a range of sedation options to suit individual needs.
Sedation dentistry involves the use of medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. The level of sedation can range from minimal, where you are awake but relaxed, to general anesthesia, where you are completely unconscious. Two common types of sedation used in dentistry are oral sedation and intravenous (IV) sedation.
Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication, usually a pill, that helps you relax. The level of sedation can be adjusted based on the dosage given. You may feel drowsy and even fall asleep, but can usually be awakened easily. This method is often used for minor dental procedures or for patients who have anxiety about visiting the dentist. It's important to note that you'll need someone to drive you home after the procedure, as the effects of the medication can linger.
